On March 2, 2011, over 300 people turned out at the quarry on the UC Santa Cruz campus, and the speakers – one after the other – drew the links between privatization and racism in public education. The speakers covered a range of topics, but what came out loud and clear was the call for Ethnic and Critical Race Studies at UC Santa Cruz.
In the wake of the suspensions of American Studies and Community Studies on this campus, the fight for Ethnic and Critical Race Studies has taken on a renewed urgency. Faculty have recently formed a working group, students have been organizing and a fresh conversation is emerging. See http://ucscethnicstudies.wordpress.com/2011/03/03/why-ethnic-studies
